Welcome to the South Shore Hospice Palliative Care Society
A Message from Our Chair, Trudy Johnson
When a small, but passionate group of volunteers got together to form the South Shore Hospice Palliative Care Society in 2019, we recognized there was a need in our community for enhanced palliative services and we knew that there would be interest. But we had no idea the level of engagement and support that would pour in from the community. I would like to thank everyone who has supported us in any way, whether through an encouraging word or a financial donation.
We have some very big news to share. We have an Executive Director! Welcome Denise Green. :
The Board of Directors of the South Shore Hospice Palliative Care Society (SSHPCS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Denise Green as the organization’s inaugural Executive Director, effective August 10, 2026.
Denise brings more than 20 years of leadership experience across fundraising, partnerships, communications, and organizational development in Nova Scotia. Throughout her career, she has held senior leadership roles with organizations including Autism Nova Scotia, Mount Saint Vincent University, United Way Halifax, and the Prescott Group, leading major fundraising initiatives, building strategic partnerships, and advancing mission-driven organizations through periods of growth and change. Denise was born and raised in Lunenburg and brings a deep connection to the South Shore and a longstanding commitment to community service.
“We are delighted to welcome Denise as the first Executive Director of SSHPCS,” said Trudy Johnson, Chair of the Board of Directors. “Denise brings a wealth of experience in fundraising, relationship-building, and community leadership. Her passion for the South Shore, combined with her ability to engage partners, donors, and volunteers around a shared vision, will be invaluable as we continue to expand hospice and palliative care services throughout our region.”
Denise shared her enthusiasm for the opportunity, saying, “I am honoured to join the South Shore Hospice Palliative Care Society at such an important time in its journey. As someone who was born and raised on the South Shore, this opportunity is both professionally and personally meaningful. SSHPCS has already made a remarkable impact through the dedication of its Board, volunteers, donors, and supporters, and I look forward to working alongside them to build on that strong foundation and advance compassionate hospice and palliative care services for our communities.”
The Board would like to recognize and thank the Fulcher Foundation for their faith and support in providing SSHPCS with a grant which facilitated the creation of the Executive Director position. They would also like to thank the dedicated volunteers, supporters, donors, staff, and community partners whose commitment has helped SSHPCS grow into a trusted advocate and provider of hospice and palliative care support across Lunenburg and Queens Counties. The creation of the Executive Director role marks an important milestone in the organization’s continued evolution and commitment to serving the South Shore community.
The beds are officially open! The official opening of the five-bed hospice unit at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital on July 30, 2026 was a huge milestone for the SSHPCS and its partner organizations. The unit which fully opened in May with 5 beds has been full since its opening. Thank you to everyone who helped to make the dream a reality.
